YOSHIYUKI MATSUMURA
A nostalgic view of now
6 January 2017
Discovering Yoshiyuki Matsumura’s photographs is like finding a secret collection of snapshots, delving into someone’s trove of intimate memories and moments: sienna, pink, and lilac hues give his work a feeling of discoloured photos and faded postcards. Touching, human and unbiased, Matsumura’s photos display exactly that: a quest of discovery, an affectionate disclosure of urban scenes, landscapes and people taken in a considered manner that is in danger of being almost forgotten in the frenzied motion of our digitalised world.
Matsumura was born and raised in Osaka . His series American Samples is a gorgeous document of a trip across the States taken in early autumn. These are contemporary moments in a timeless zone; settings familiar to all of us, but ones we have only just encountered; figures we recognise at once, but have never met. Matsumura’s photos document real people in real places, ones we feel comfortable and close to: A nostalgic view of now.
