JOANNA MCCLURE
This is how we hang
26 June 2017
Folds, leanings, the proclivities, angles and habits of inanimate objects – it’s all in the balance. New York photographer Joanna McClure’s persistent analysis of minute details takes your breath away. Unlimited time, a paced attitude, precision, and infinite patience are all vital components of her meticulous work, not to mention a keen sense of colour, material, framing and light.
It might be the symptoms of mild OCD, procrastination, or the games of bored children that serve as inspiration for the positioning of her still lives, but it’s a stylistic decision that is well placed (no pun). Delicate and sensitive, the photographer’s perseverance and sense of play is inimitable and offers the viewer an enduring and familiar alternative look at the order of things, object hierarchies and our precious alignment of the world that surrounds us.
